The Nagarjuna Hiking Trail is a one day trek and one of the finest destinations for trekking near the Kathmandu Valley. It is a close hill from Kathmandu Located at distance of seven kilometers north-west of Kathmandu. Nagarjuna is the nearest hill site of Kathmandu Valley covered by thick forest with historical as well as a natural combination. It is a part of Shivapuri National Park located north-west of Kathmandu. The hill is famous for its dazzling location and the Buddhist stupa influential in its crown. The magnificent view of Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang is another important attraction of the trip. You can start your hike from the Gate of Nagarjuna near Balaju bypass known as Fulbari gate.
It is one of the most popular, shortest and easiest excursions near Kathmandu. The etymology for its name as Nagarjuna is based in a mythological statement that it’s the location where Acharya Nagarjuna has meditated. Nagarjuna also described as Vindhya Mountain which is the most popular pilgrimage sites for Hindus as well as Buddhist. Here, you can feel peace of mind in a natural environment and this is the best place to meditate. This mountain got its name as Nagarjuna because the sage Nagarjuna had resided in a cave in this place to meditate. Beside the cave of Nagarjuna, there is a cave of another Buddha, the Mahasiddhas.
The stupas of Buddha, the ancient caves and finally the Jamacho view point (2128 m) are the main attractions of this hiking. .The Nagarjun hill contains a wide variety of plants and animals on the trail. This trip is very favorable for the nature lovers as we can also see a wide variety of birds and enjoy the chirping of the birds and tweeting of insects throughout the trial. Incredible Himalayan scene of Jugal, Ganesh Himal with Langtang region can be viewed from here. Further from the Top of Nagarjuna we can see the view of Kathmandu valley. The trial also goes through villages where people still follow traditional countryside lifestyle. So the Nagarjun hill holds a great significance in the golden history of Nepal as it fort of Kathmandu city ancient times before Nepal was united.
1. Drive to Fulbari Gate, hiking starting point.
2. Hike to Jamacho Gumba for 3 - 4 hours
3. Walk down to Fulbari gate.
4. Drive back to Kathmandu.
